Waymo develops self-driving technology, which it calls the Waymo Driver, and runs driverless ride-hailing services. It began in 2009 as Google's self-driving car project and became a separate company under Alphabet in 2016. It is based in Mountain View, California, and is led by co-chief executives Tekedra Mawakana and Dmitri Dolgov.
Waymo provided 15 million rides in 2025. By February 2026 it was giving more than 400,000 paid rides a week across six US metropolitan areas, and it planned to lay the groundwork for services in over 20 more cities during 2026, including London and Tokyo. In September 2026 it announced plans to launch in Singapore, with a public service planned for 2028. The company says that across 127 million fully autonomous miles its cars had 90% fewer serious injury crashes than human drivers.
In February 2026 Waymo raised $16 billion at a $126 billion valuation, led by Dragoneer Investment Group, DST Global and Sequoia Capital. Alphabet remains its majority investor.
