Tesla makes electric vehicles and energy storage systems and says it is focused on bringing AI into the real world. It is based in Austin, Texas, and Elon Musk is chief executive. Its AI work centres on FSD (Supervised), its driver-assistance software; a Robotaxi ride-hailing service it launched in June 2025; Cybercab, a purpose-built driverless car that went into production at its Texas factory in 2026; and Optimus, a general-purpose humanoid robot.
Tesla ended production of the Model S and Model X in May 2026 and converted that line at its Fremont factory to build Optimus. According to reporting in September 2026, it was building several hundred robots a week by August, mostly for internal testing, training and data collection, and was aiming for more than 1,000 a week by the end of the year. The robots coming off the line are the V3 design, which is not yet the version Tesla plans to sell, and reports describe continuing problems with the hands and with how well the robots handle varied tasks.
Tesla is listed on Nasdaq. It also holds an equity stake in SpaceX.
