Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) is the unit inside Meta Platforms that builds the company's AI models and the Meta AI assistant. Mark Zuckerberg created it in 2025, reportedly unhappy that Meta's Llama models lagged behind rivals, and recruited Scale AI co-founder Alexandr Wang to lead it as Meta's chief AI officer.

Meta was long the leading US developer of open-weight models through the Llama family, released under Meta's own community licence. In April 2026 MSL released its first model, Muse Spark. Unlike Llama, its weights are not public, although Zuckerberg has said Meta plans to release new open models in future.

Muse Spark powers the Meta AI app and website and is being brought to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, Threads and Meta's AI glasses. In early September 2026 Meta launched Muse, a personal agent that connects to services such as email and calendars to carry out everyday tasks. At its Connect event later that month, Zuckerberg called Muse the centre of Meta's plans for AI.
