LangChain builds tools for developing AI agents and applications on top of language models. Its open-source LangChain framework connects models to data, tools and other services, and LangGraph, also open source, is used to build agents that run multi-step workflows and keep track of their state. Both are MIT-licensed. LangSmith, its paid platform, covers tracing, monitoring, evaluation and deployment. The company describes its focus as "agent engineering": turning agent prototypes into reliable production systems.
Harrison Chase started LangChain as a side project in late 2022 and founded the company with Ankush Gola in early 2023. It is headquartered in San Francisco, with offices in New York, Boston and Amsterdam. The LangChain repository has more than 140,000 GitHub stars and LangGraph more than 40,000. Customers named by the company and press include Cisco, Replit, Clay, Cloudflare, Workday and ServiceNow, and the company says it works with 35% of the Fortune 500.
In October 2025 LangChain raised $125 million at a $1.25 billion valuation, in a round led by IVP with Sequoia, Benchmark, CapitalG and Sapphire Ventures.
