Google DeepMind is the central AI research and model-building unit of Alphabet, Google's parent company. It was formed in April 2023 by merging DeepMind, a London lab founded in 2010, with the Brain team from Google Research. It builds the Gemini models and also runs the Gemini app and the teams that serve developers.
DeepMind is known for scientific milestones such as AlphaGo, which beat a world champion at the board game Go, and AlphaFold, which predicts the 3D shapes of proteins and earned Demis Hassabis and John Jumper a share of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Its other work includes the Veo video models, the Genie world models and research in robotics, weather and genomics.
Since August 2026 Koray Kavukcuoglu has run the unit day to day as senior vice president, reporting to Google's chief executive, Sundar Pichai. Demis Hassabis stepped back from that role to become chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet, and continues to lead the drug discovery company Isomorphic Labs. Its newest model, Gemini 4 Argon, was announced on 30 September 2026 and is first going to a small group of cybersecurity defenders.
