Epoch AI is a non-profit research organisation that studies the trajectory of artificial intelligence using data. Its work covers three areas: the drivers of AI progress, such as compute (the processing power used to train models), hardware and investment; the measurement of AI capabilities; and the economic and social impact of AI.
It began in 2021 as a group of volunteers collecting data on machine learning models, and became Epoch AI after a widely cited 2022 paper on trends in training compute. It runs public databases of AI models, hardware, GPU clusters and data centres, and creates benchmarks, most notably FrontierMath, a test of advanced mathematics whose core problems OpenAI commissioned and funded. It also publishes the Epoch Capabilities Index and GATE, a model of AI's economic effects.
Epoch is a 501(c)(3) charity funded mainly by donors, the largest being Coefficient Giving, and it also does paid work for companies such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind and for governments. Its global team is led by co-founder and chief executive Jaime Sevilla.
