Cognition is a San Francisco company that builds AI agents for software engineering. Its main product, Devin, launched in March 2024 and is described by the company as an autonomous software engineer that plans, writes, tests and ships code. Scott Wu, who started the company in 2024, is chief executive.
In 2025 Cognition acquired Windsurf, an AI coding editor. In June 2026 it introduced Devin Desktop as the next generation of Windsurf: an editor built around a command centre for managing local and cloud agents, which stays fully compatible with Windsurf. Cognition also trains its own coding models, the SWE series; SWE-2 arrived in September 2026. It calls itself an independent agent lab that combines its own models with those of other labs.
Cognition sells mainly to large companies, with customers including NVIDIA, Citi, GE Aerospace and Mercedes-Benz. In September 2026 it raised more than $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation in a round led by Andreessen Horowitz and Accel, four months after raising more than $1 billion at $26 billion. It says its annualised revenue run rate passed $1 billion in late September 2026. It has offices in San Francisco, New York, Austin, London, Tokyo, Singapore and elsewhere.
