Trainium is the family of AI chips that Amazon Web Services (AWS) designs for training and running models in its cloud. The chips come from Annapurna Labs, the chip designer Amazon bought in 2015, and are developed partly at a lab in Austin, Texas. Trainium supports PyTorch, the widely used open-source framework for building AI models.

AWS announced the first Trainium in December 2020. Trainium2 powers Project Rainier, a large AWS cluster that runs Anthropic's Claude models, and Claude runs on more than one million Trainium2 chips. Trainium3, a 3-nanometre chip made by TSMC, was released in December 2025, and Trainium4 is in development. About 1.4 million Trainium chips across three generations had been deployed by March 2026.

Anthropic and OpenAI are its largest named customers. Anthropic has committed to use up to five gigawatts of current and future Trainium generations. In February 2026 Amazon agreed to invest $50 billion in OpenAI, and OpenAI agreed to use two gigawatts of Trainium capacity from 2027. Amazon says its custom chip business, which also includes Graviton CPUs, has passed a $25 billion annual revenue run rate. Peter DeSantis leads Amazon's combined AI models, chips and quantum computing organisation.
