President Trump signed an executive order, “Ensuring a National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence”, aimed at state AI laws the administration sees as burdensome. It set up a Justice Department task force to challenge them, told Commerce to identify “onerous” state laws, tied broadband funding to them, and asked for a federal law to preempt (override) state rules. The White House sent Congress its legislative recommendations in March 2026.
